Unique Student Identifier (USI)

What is a USI?

The Unique Student Identifier (USI) is a unique, personal reference number made up of 10 letters and numbers that creates an online record of your nationally recognised training and qualifications in Australia. The USI stays with a student for life and is essential for accessing a complete record of qualifications and units of study from multiple Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). Learn more on the official USI website.

Why is a USI Important?

  • For Students: It allows students to access their complete training history, making it easier to prove qualifications for jobs, credit transfers, or further study.
  • For RTOs: It enables accurate record keeping, compliance with Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and national reporting, and streamlines administrative processes related to student training records.

Who Needs a USI?

  • Any student undertaking nationally recognised training in Australia must have a USI.
  • This applies to domestic and international students studying in Australia.
  • Exceptions include international students studying offshore or students who were granted exemptions.

How to Create a USI

You must create your own USI before or at the time of enrolment. The USI is free and easy to create online:

  • Visit the Student Portal on the official USI website
  • Agree to terms and conditions and hit Next.
  • Click on Create USI option.
  • When asked, select No for “Are you applying for a USI on behalf of another person?”
  • Provide your personal details and a form of valid Australian identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, Medicare card).
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete your USI registration.

Note: Watch the video below for a step-by-step visual guide to creating your USI. Important:

  • You will need to enter your USI when completing your enrolment application with Integrity RTO Solutions.
  • If you do not have a USI, you cannot complete your enrolment or be issued a nationally recognised qualification.

How RTOs Manage USIs

RTOs are required to collect, verify, and securely store USIs for all enrolled students. Verification can be done through the USI verification portal individually or in bulk via integrated Student Management Systems. Compliance with USI regulations is mandatory to issue nationally recognised qualifications or statements of attainment.
